Perfect Is A Place To Hide
"Perfect is a place to hide"
This quote from Seth Godin has been sitting on my computer since last year. I attended an online seminar back in December of 2020, and from the hour long session, this was the one thing that had stood out. I immediately wrote it down, and on my computer is where it sits.
"Perfect is a place to hide"
I see it when I sit down to start my day in the morning, and until I close up for the evening.
Why am I sharing this and what does this mean? To me, this is a gentle nudge, a reminder of sorts, that not everything has to be (or will be) perfect. When coming up with creative ideas there is a tendency to want those ideas to be perfect. There is nothing wrong with that, as none of us wants to put out below average work. We strive to do our best.
The issue is hiding behind the perfection.
- Not posting a blog or article because you think it can be better, and constantly doing re-writes.
- Afraid to upload a video or podcast because you coughed or made a slight stumble when speaking, and re-shooting until it seemed perfect.
- Holding back a program or promotion because the copy or contents could be just that much better, and either never shipping or missing the window of opportunity.
I've been guilty of all of these, and probably a good bit more. It doesn't mean I want to ship out bad ideas. Far from the contrary. However, when I get my ducks all in a row, I don't need to get out the ruler and make sure they are perfectly spaced apart and in the straightest of lines. They can be off center a little.

What is perfection holding you back from sharing to the world?
